What is Zoom! Whitening?

A popular alternative to tray methods, Zoom! whitening is a safe and effective bleaching process widely used to lighten the discoloration of enamel and dentin. Tooth discoloration may result from drinking coffee, tea, cola, and red wine, or from smoking. The aging process also can stain and darken your teeth.

The Zoom! in-office tooth whitening procedure uses the Zoom! Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to accelerate the bleaching process to activate the 25 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances, leaving the tooth's structure unchanged.

Before deciding whether Zoom! in-office teeth whitening is right for you, your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to ensure proper health, as well as talk with you about your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine if you will benefit from whitening. The Zoom! In-Office Whitening Procedure

  • First, the dentist performs a comprehensive exam, meant to highlight any dental problems that need to be addressed before getting a whitening treatment done. This ensures that the Zoom! whitening procedure works as effectively as possible and prevents any future damage to the teeth.
  • If no such conditions are found, then our dentist performs a teeth cleaning procedure and begins preparation for treatment by covering the lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed.
  • The dentist or dental assistant then applies the Zoom! hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works together with the Zoom! light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated.
  • The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. Afterward, our dentist cleans away the Zoom! whitening gel and the procedure concludes.

The complete procedure takes less than an hour. Once your whitening treatment ends, your dentist will provide you with a custom-made, in-home touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays.

Your dentist will provide you with instructions for when and how to use the kit. Toothpaste containing whitening agents also may be suggested to help maintain the results of the procedure.

When considering a Zoom! whitening procedure, it is important to remember that individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty undergoing the entire procedure. If you have any of these issues, speak with your dentist before starting treatment.

Does Zoom! Whitening Work?

Over the years, Catawba Springs Dental Care has seen more teeth whitening options come forward. While some have been more effective than others, the one that has been a favorite due to its outstanding results has been Zoom!

Whitening with Zoom! can occur in as little as one appointment. At-home maintenance is simple too, with an at-home whitening kit to help you maintain optimal teeth whiteness.

To help maintain the effects of your Zoom! whitening procedure, your dentist may advise you to avoid tobacco products or certain foods and beverages (like tea, coffee, red wine, or cola) to avoid staining your teeth. Another way to maintain healthy and shiny teeth is to practice an appropriate oral hygiene regimen to prevent stains from reforming. You should also see your dentist regularly for scheduled teeth cleanings.
